What is the LAPDP?
The LAPDP is one of the laboratories in Cognitive Psychology. We are located on the 3rd floor of the Biology/Psychology Building. We run experiments on the cognitive factors of human/computer interaction.

Can I visit the LAPDP?
Yes, you can stop by BPS 3111 if the door is open and talk to one of the students or faculty. Or you can set up an appointment by calling 301 405-5924 or emailing lapdp@lap.umd.edu.

Can I work at the LAPDP?
Sometimes we hire students to work on projects, generally for programming or for systems administration, mostly computer stuff. More often students work on research projects by enrolling in Psyc 478 or 479 for 1 to 3 credits. To do this, first check with the Undergraduate Advising Office to see if you are eligible. Generally, we like to take students who have been had Psyc 200 and Psyc 440 and have been in one of the classes taught by an LAPDP member. Then contact the LAPDP faculty member about the possibility.

Where can I direct my questions?
You can either call the LAPDP at 301 405-5938 to talk to one of the students or email lapdp@lap.umd.edu or call Dr. Norman at 301 405-5924 or email kent_norman@lap.umd.edu

I'm writing a report. Who do I go to for help?
If it is a police report, call the Chair of the Psychology Department for details of our criminal activities. If it is a report on our more noble activities you can get a lot of information from this Web site and from our press releases. For additional information, go to the "Where can I direct my questions?"

I'd like a LAPDP professor, researcher, or graduate student to give a lecture or presentation at a meeting of my group. How do I schedule this?
We would love to give lectures to promote the study and funding of research in human/computer interaction. Contact one of us from the information above. We can talk intelligently and humorously on many subjects. Here's our list of topics:
  • usability of computers and user testing
  • general issues in human/computer interaction
  • design of online surveys
  • computer rage and user frustration
  • menu selection and navigation
  • the stupidity of artificial intelligence
  • electronic classrooms, distance education, etc.
  • Harry Potter and why muggles need computers
These are not on our list of topics (yet):
  • video games and male aggressive behavior
  • computer viruses
  • sex and the internet
  • ice hockey
  • Bill Gates
  • virtual reality

I'd like to interview a LAPDP professor, researcher, or graduate student.
How do I arrange this?

Call or email the contacts listed above.

How do I apply to your graduate program?
Our program is within the Department of Psychology. You may apply to the Cognitive Area in Psychology. We only accept applicants for the Ph.D. program within Cognitive Psychology. You must apply through the Department of Psychology.
Alternatively, you may work with us through the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) program. We also work with graduate students in Computer Science and the College of Information Studies.
We do not have a masters program, on the other hand you can work with us as a Special Non-degree Seeking Graduate Student, but we don't know what that will buy for you.

Can you send me an application?
Please, let us know of your interest and we will direct you to the appropriate avenue for application.

Can I intern at the LAPDP?
Yes, if you have completed your medical degree, you can be an intern in our human/computer interaction teaching hospital. Or if you have a high school degree and you are interested in human/computer interaction, you can apply to our intern program. Contact the contacts above.
