HyperCourseware Overview

HyperCourseware consists of the Home Screen and a set of inter-connected modules. The modules can be run in either a stand-alone mode or on a local area network. The network allows for the communication between the instructor's modules and the students for interaction sessions, feedback, and collaborative projects. The modules assume either an instructor mode or a student mode. In the instructor mode, the user has more priveleges to modify the information and disseminate files to the students.

Home Screen

HyperCourseware uses a Home Screen to initiate the interaction with the student and as a navigational hub to access the course materials. The home screen configures the system for the particular course, student, and workstation being used.

Educational materials can be divided into the input of course materials and the output of course products. Course materials in the traditional classroom consist of textbooks, lecture materials of the instructor, and the students themselves. The products of education include written papers, projects, and grades. All of these are in electronic form. The processes of education include discussion, access to resources, and collaboration.

Course Materials

The primary organizing element in HyperCourseware is the syllabus. The instructor inputs the dates, topics, readings, and assignments into this module. It is used by the students to jump to each of these materials.

The materials module is an index used to access course materials suchs are definitions, data bases, and simulations.

The reading module accesses a list of readings. The module may other point to reading documents, provide notes on the readings, or present the readings itself.

Assignments are listed by date and name in this module. Each assignment is described along with a workspace provided so that the assignment can be directly submitted.

The class roll provides an index to short biographical statements entered by the students and the instructor and presents a picture of each person.

Course Products

One of the first products of education is the scheduling of work by the student. This module will be an aid to students struggling to schedule their time and work. This module is not complete.

Various types of notes can be taking and accessed by the student. This module keeps track of the journal notes, notes used to annotate lectures, and collective group notes.

The projects module links to interactive workspaces that are shared by members of project teams. The project space can be configured by the instructor and filled in by the teams.

The exam module is used to schedule exams by date and jump to exams set up from templates. Exams may be of any type from essay, to multiple choice, to problems.

The grades module allows the students to access their current grades. It also shows grade distributions set up by the instructor.

Course Tools

The setup module is used to configure the system to the particular network and directories being used by the students and instructor.

The directions module provides instructions on the use of HyperCourseware. This module is not complete.

The seating module shows a setaing chart of the electronic classroom and the location of each student logged into the system. Remote locations are also shown. This module also provides for attendence records.

The mail module is used as an in house mail system to pass messages between the instructor and students.

The Chat module opens up a number chat channels for the student/instructor dialogue. These can be configured for particular subjects and to provide anonymous, aliased, or signed input.

The dicussion module provides additional dicussion tools for collation and distribution of short comments, shared class notes, and swapping of text.
